Education
University of California Santa Barbara, 2007
B.S. Ecology & Evolution with a minor in Anthropology
California State University Channel Islands, 2013
Masters in Business Administration
M.S. Biotechnology with an emphasis on Stem Cell Laboratory Management
Current Work
As a CSUCI stem cell emphasis major, Luella was fortunate to receive a one year scholarship of $40,000 from CIRM to intern in one of the prestigious laboratories on a long list of options. She chose Dr. Aboody’s translational research lab at City of Hope and was placed on a project under her brilliant post-doc Dr. Rachael Mooney. Dr. Aboody pioneered that stem cells had the innate ability to track tumors and uses neural stem cells to deliver localized chemotherapy to cancer sites. She currently finished Phase I clinical trials to treat glioblastoma, a malignant brain tumor with less than 6 month patient survival time.
Luella is currently working on a project to use near-infrared light and gold nanoparticle loaded stem cells to target cancer sites. The idea is to use stem cells as a delivery vehicle for gold nanoparticles. The near-infrared light then stimulates the gold nanoparticles at a wavelength which causes them to generate heat thus ablating the tumor. Luella has been working on a couple publications and hopes to have them submitted to scientific journals while finishing the dual M.S., M.B.A program at CSUCI in September 2013.
